Transportation and Sustainability
A smart city must look at transportation bottlenecks as the fundamental area of design. Or a city that is expanding must have a solution in terms of logistics to be able to grow.
Transportation alone generates 14% emissions globally and if advanced nations are the future models then we would reach 26% as U.S. Of the total 7 Billion tons of Greenhouse gases that U.S. produces, 26% of that is from transportation alone. More importantly 46% of liquid fossil fuel is consumed in transportation alone in U.S. These numbers are looking ominous in China as well or anywhere else in times to come.
So transportation is clearly an area to be looked at with a watchful eye. And when the rest of the emerging economies is about to embark on economic growth, it is important to rethink that future models better not be predicated on the past models, which have been reminders of an unsustainable model of growth.
