Woolies take stance against single-use plastics

You may have heard the term ‘single-use plastic’ lately, and you’ll be hearing more and more of it. To become more environmentally friendly and lead more sustainable lifestyles, a trend has formed of people avoiding single-use plastics. Basically, anything you can’t or wouldn’t use more than once, such as a plastic straw or plastic grocery bag, is no longer fashionable. Even our biggest supermarkets are jumping on the bandwagon.

Earlier this year, supermarket giant Woolworths, announced that within 12 months it would no longer be using plastic bags in its stores.  Within hours, its main competitor Coles announced they would also be phasing out single-use plastic bags in its stores.

In rethinking their approach to shopping bags, Woolies has said it will be offering a variety of alternative shopping bag options that would be reusable.

It is great to see some of our leading retailers taking charge on an important environmental issue that is single-use plastics. We encourage our readers to pay attention to the number of single-use plastics that you use throughout each day, rethink what you can do to avoid or reduce your usage.
