Eating Food That Doesn’t Cost the Earth

When buying fresh produce including meat, bread, milk, fruit and vegetables at major supermarkets, consumers are often purchasing products that have been sourced interstate or internationally.

Often these products have undertaken great food miles before arriving to your plate and can be over packaged.

In 2008 the ‘Food Miles in Australia Report’ (Ceres) found that an average shopping basket of 29 common food items travelled over 70,000kms.

We encourage you to Rethink’ how you purchase your fresh produce by shopping locally. When buying locally you are not only supporting local growers but you are also helping the environment by using less energy emissions and food miles.

Harvest Hub at Macquarie University provides local and fresh seasonal produce and groceries that are sourced from within the Sydney Basin.
